Each walk link on this site points to GuruWalk and includes a referral code. The code never changes the cost for you: every walk is free to reserve and pay-what-you-want, with the tip going to the guide. No guide, tour company, or operator has paid for placement here, and they never will. Edinburgh's attractions, from the Royal Mile to Arthur's Seat, stand independently of any booking you make through this page.
How The Site Gets Paid
Links to every walk on this page lead to GuruWalk, a separate platform that this site does not run. Each link includes a referral code, and when a visitor reserves a free spot and later tips the guide, GuruWalk sends this site a small share of that tip. Reserving is free, so the code adds nothing to what you pay. Guides choose their own routes, their own schedules, and their own style, and this site has no control over any of that.
Aside from the tours, the only affiliate links are the three hotels in the homepage Where to Stay block and a few budget-travel links for hostels, airport transfers, luggage storage and eSIMs. When one is used, the provider pays this site a commission from its own margin, and the price is the same as booking without the link. No other monetisation exists on these pages: no link points to a paid tour-booking platform, and none is named or promoted here.
The 25 walks in the free walking tours directory are independent local guides' pay-what-you-want GuruWalk tours, not tours run by this site. Any link from that directory carries a GuruWalk referral code, and that code does not change what anyone pays or tips. These pages carry no display ads, no sponsored posts and no paid placements, and a future revenue stream would be disclosed in the footer and on this page before it went live.
Edinburgh's Free Sights That Bring No Income
Most of an Edinburgh visit costs this site nothing. Portobello beach, Cramond, the Water of Leith walkway, and Calton Hill are all open to walk through without paying anyone. Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse are paid attractions, and this site names them as such rather than blurring the line. A walk around Dean Village on your own earns no referral, and the only links that could pay are the GuruWalk tours listed here.
This site passes on GuruWalk figures exactly as they are published, without rounding or smoothing. The largest walk on the roster holds 6,470 GuruWalk reviews, while another has exactly four. Ratings span 4 to 5, and nothing here narrows that gap to look better. A walk with thin numbers is described in those terms, not dressed up as something bigger.
What No Payment Buys Here
- How a walk qualifies. To qualify, a walk must be real and bookable on GuruWalk, pay what you want, and run by an independent local guide. Its rating and review count sit on this site exactly as GuruWalk publishes them. That test produced the 25 walks in 5 categories.
- No one buys a ranking. The order of walks in any category comes straight from GuruWalk's own ratings and review totals. A guide cannot pay to jump ahead, and no one has offered to. Every walk stands where its guide's work and visitor feedback put it, not where money would place it.
- Big and small alike. A Spanish-language walk rated 4.72 across 6,470 GuruWalk reviews appears in the same lineup as one rated 4 across 4, each printed exactly as GuruWalk carries it. A walk with no reviews shows no rating rather than an invented one.
- No hidden entry costs. Every walk here is free to reserve on GuruWalk, and the guide is paid only by the tip you choose to leave at the end. If a walk ever came with an extra out-of-pocket cost like a ticket or a tasting, we would state it plainly in the description instead of burying it.
- Things we earn nothing from. Dean Village wandered alone, the Royal Mile closes, Portobello's promenade and Calton Hill at sunset. None of them pay this site a penny, and they still get their say wherever they beat a guided walk.
Ratings We Pass On
The figures shown for each walk come straight from that walk's GuruWalk page. They are never averaged, rounded up or guessed, even when a walk has very few reviews. The roster's low mark is 4 across 4 GuruWalk reviews, and its high is 5 across 14; each appears exactly as GuruWalk reports it.
No price comparison exists because reserving the guiding costs nothing. Every walk here is pay what you want: you reserve a free spot and tip the guide whatever the walk was worth to you. Durations, ratings and review counts all come from each guide's GuruWalk page, and they run from 1 hour 15 minutes to 3 hours.
